How To Legalize A Document In Thailand Blog

Legalizing your documents in Thailand can seem overwhelming if you’re unsure where to start. Whether you need to use your documents abroad or for official processes in Thailand, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Why Do You Need to Legalize Your Documents?

Document legalization is necessary when you need official recognition of documents across borders. Whether you’re a foreign national in Thailand or a Thai citizen moving abroad, legalized documents are often mandatory for visa applications, legal procedures, employment, or even marriage registration.

Common Documents That Can Be Legalized:

Here are some of the most frequently legalized documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Passport
  • ID card
  • House Registration
  • Court Orders
  • Educational Certificates

Steps to Legalizing a Document in Thailand:

  1. Prepare Your Documents: Ensure you have both originals and copies of your documents, along with your ID card or passport.
  2. Certified Translation: Any non-Thai documents must be translated and certified by a professional translator.
  3. Submit the Application: Visit the Legalization Division at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and fill out the required forms.
  4. Pay the Fees: Legalization fees range between 400 and 800 baht per document, depending on whether you choose regular or express service.
  5. Receive Your Legalized Documents: Collection can take 3 business days for regular service or on the same day for express service.

Where Can You Legalize Your Documents?

The primary location for document legalization in Thailand is the Legalization Division at the MFA. If the process seems too complicated, many translation agencies, including Sawadee Translations, offer comprehensive services that include both certified translation and document legalization.

I want to legalize the separation certificate, but my wife is a Thai citizen and I am a Portuguese citizen. I live in Denmark. I would like to know more about what I need to do to sign the documents without traveling to Thailand.

      Dear Khun Luis,

Thank you for your comment on our blog about how to legalize a document in Thailand.

If you wish to legalize your separation certificate without traveling to Thailand, the process can typically be completed remotely with the following steps:

      1. Document Translation: If the certificate is not already in Thai, it must be translated and certified.
      2. Authentication by Thai Embassy/Consulate: As a Portuguese citizen residing in Denmark, you may need to authenticate your document at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in Denmark.
      3. Power of Attorney: You can grant someone in Thailand a power of attorney to handle the legalization process on your behalf at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

We can assist with the entire process, including translation, power of attorney preparation, and document submission to the MFA in Thailand. Please contact us via email ([email protected]) or our contact form with a copy of your certificate, and we’ll guide you through the next steps.

We look forward to helping you!

To certify your marriage certificate at the Thai Consular Office for your wife’s Non-O visa application, you will typically need:

      2. A certified Thai translation of the marriage certificate.

    Dear mr or mrs,
We have bought a condo and because of that we must have a translation of our passport for the landoffice.
A thai lady (manager of the condominium) did it at Sawadee solutions. Now we want to change the blue book for yellow book but at the municipality they say its not the good one it must have apotheek stamp,i think they mean legalising.
Your reference is 04929 and 042928.
Do you know what they mean?
If so that it must be legalised ,how much does it cost and can we do it online?
    Hope to hear from you.

      Dear Khun GT Bakhuijsen,

Thank you for your comment on our guide about how to legalize a document in Thailand.

It sounds like the municipality requires your passport translation to be legalized, likely with an apostille or certification by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). This ensures the translation meets official standards for use in obtaining a yellow book.

      We can assist you with:

      1. Reviewing your current translation.
      2. Legalizing the document with the appropriate authority.

For an accurate quotation, please share the document and additional details via email ([email protected]) or our contact form. Most steps can be completed online, and we’ll guide you through the process.

We look forward to helping you resolve this quickly!
